A man lives with his wife, who hates him.
He has a cat, but the cat hates him too. So he buys a fish: fish are supposed to be pleasant.
But the fish also hates him – so much, that one day, when the cat lowers its paw into the glass bowl, the fish floats to the surface and allows itself to be captured and eaten, simply to escape.
The cat, however, does not look pleased after eating the fish; it looks like a man who has shot his friend to ease his suffering.
So the man buys a dog. But the dog hates him even more, if this is possible.
The cat obviously cannot eat the dog, but it does not want to; the cat is tired of eating all the hate. In the early hours of one morning, the cat allows the dog to savage him, tearing out his heart on the living room floor, his blood soaking into the worn carpet.
So the man buys a bird. But the bird, perhaps picking up on the general atmosphere of the place, flees…
